What is Piping System?

Piping System - It is the proper systematic arrangement of pipes, pipe fittings, supports, safety devices, instrumentation, pumps, various types of valves, equipment’s, components & more…… which carries or transferring gas, liquid, fluid, water, vapour from one place to another.

The Piping System make an Important role to fulfilled the various purpose of distribution, supply, manufacturing and production of all type of products in industries, pharmaceutical, commercial & residential requirements.

Uses of Piping System

The Piping Systems are an essential and integral part of our daily life. All things are very effectively impactful and useful in all our common daily life.

Such as we use distribution system of water, gas, plumbing, electricity system at our home. Similarly, in school, colleges and offices. It is used in hospitals to transport gases and fluids for medical purposes.

A Thermal Power Plant's Piping system, is designed to efficiently convey superheated steam at elevated pressures to power turbines & produce electricity.

The system used to carry crude oil from oil wells to refineries for processing various types of gases, fluids, vapors such as diesel, petrol, tar and lot more…!! Our daily transportation with variety of vehicles Reqd. diesel and petrol as fuel, use of tar for making road that make our travel connections fast and smooth.

Other Piping System is used by chemical industries, food processing, petroleum piping, petrochemical, pharmaceutical plants, paper mills and industries to carry liquids, chemicals, mixtures, gases and vapors.

The most common and special Components of Piping System are:

  • Pipe – A long hollow cylinder, with different standard size and thickness to carry or transfer fluids.

  • Pipe Fittings – These are used to connect pipe spool one to another to construct or build long and flexible pipe routing system

  • Various types of Valves – These are used to, stop, divert & control fluid flow depending upon the type of function and application use.

  • Filters, Strainers, Traps, Expansion Loops – These are the special part to use for trap of any foreign particles, dust present in fluid for clean and smooth flowing of pump function, expansion loops are used to accommodate expansion and contraction of pipe during temperature variations.

  • Various types of Pumps – Used to move, compress or transfer water, or fluids from one place to another.

  • Various types of Instruments like

Sensors, Transducers, controllers, signals, pressure gauges, temperature Indicators used to measure, display, control, manage many parameters with physical values i.e. temperature and pressure differential, static flow rate etc.

Common Pipe Supports of Piping System

To avoid sagging of pipe due to heavy load, contraction & expansion of pipe due to variation in temperature, change in internal & external pressure of fluid, impact of environmental factors like earthquake, wind due to dynamic nature the Piping System must remain stable & withstand in all under the severe conditions it becomes necessary to support the Pipe & Piping System.

So, there are three main type of Supports which are as follows:

1) Primary Supports:

Primary Supports are those that attach or direct connect to pipe itself. i.e. pipe shoe, clamp support, guide supports etc.

2) Secondary Supports:

Secondary Supports are those that attach or connect to primary support, steel structures, equipment’s, grade, RCC Structures.

3) Spring Supports: These are of two types

  • Variable Type
  • Constant Force Type

Selection of Material

Piping System plays a very important role to making or convert any process to its final product. So, to withstand with determine temperatures and pressures of process treatment as well as requirement we should follow the code and standard & material specification for Piping.

Selection of material and pipe sizing depend upon pressure, temperature and flow rate as per process need and carrying variety of fluid nature such as high pressure gas, liquids, fluid, water, air, steam etc.

Material used for piping are mild steel, carbon steel, stainless steel, aluminum, copper, brass, glass and plastic. Pipe fittings and valves are made of same material as the pipe.

Further step of Piping System will be design i.e. Pipeline routing layouts, Construction of piping, operations and Maintenance of various eqpt. Piping Systems including inspection and testing.

Conclusion:

So, to work in Piping field one should have the knowledge of material selection, its criteria, specific design considerations, basic piping fundamentals, fabrication, installation, testing and inspection requirements.
