Hello Friends, as you all well known about isolation and regulation valves in our journey of valves series, now we are continuing with it and we will take a look to understand about the remaining regulating valves, one of which is Globe Valve.
It is named for its spherical body shape, consist of a movable disk or plug & a stationary ring seat in a generally spherical body. A handwheel / actuator turns a stem that moves a disk.

They are commonly used for on-off isolation, their design makes them suitable for accurate flow regulation. The linear motion of the valve disc, perpendicular to the flow direction to allows fine-tuning of the opening and making Globe Valves effective in controlling flow rates within a pipeline. This makes Globe Valve valuable in uses where, precise control is essential.
Overview of Globe Valve:
A Globe Valve is a critical component in fluid control, with a spherical body housing a movable disk for precise modulation. Widely used in industries, it regulates liquids, gases, and steam with reliability. Offering bidirectional flow for flexibility & simplified maintenance, the valve can be operated manually or automatically.
Available in various sizes and materials, Globe Valves are customizable, playing a crucial role in ensuring optimal flow regulation in systems like boiler feedwater, cooling water, and diverse industrial processes.
Globe Valves in Piping:
Flow Regulation:
Globe Valves are designed for precise flow rate control by regulating fluid flow through the up-and-down movement of a disk or plug.
Pressure Drop:
These Valves normally having higher pressure drop, compared to other types of valves like, Ball Valves. This is important to consider when selecting valves for a Piping System, as it can affect the overall system performance.
Direction of Flow:
The flow through a Globe Valve is usually, from the bottom to the top of the valve. This direction is important to ensure proper operation and to avoid issues like cavitation.
Actuation:
Globe Valves can be operated by hand using a wheel, or controlled automatically with electric, pneumatic, or hydraulic power for remote use.

Body:
A Globe Valve's round body holds its inner parts.
Bonnet:
Protects & encloses the valve's moving parts.
Disc or Plug:
The disk / plug on the stem, controls the flow by moving.
Seat:
A fixed ring, that forms a seal with the disk or plug, to stopping fluid leakage when the valve is closed.
Stem:
It is connected to the disk or plug, extends externally from the valve which is controlled by an actuator or handwheel to position the disk.
Actuator:
The mechanism that opens & closes the valve, either manually (handwheel) or through automation.
Globe Valve as Regulating Valve:
A Globe Valve, renowned for its precise control capabilities, excels as a regulating valve, its spherical body & movable disk enabling fine-tuned flow modulation for stable and reliable performance across various industries demanding accurate fluid management.

Types of Globe Valves:
1. Conventional Globe Valve:
- Simple design with a linear motion stem & a disk which is perpendicular to the flow.

2. Angle Globe Valve:
- The valve body and flow path are angled, allowing for easier installation in pipelines with limited space.
- Suitable for applications where a vertical flow path is not feasible.
3. Needle Globe Valve:
- Similar to a conventional globe valve but has a tapered, needle-like disk for precise flow control.
- Often used in applications requiring fine throttling.
4. Bellows Globe Valve:
- These valve consist, joining a bellows assembly to create a hermetic seal & prevent the leakage of hazardous or toxic fluids.
- Commonly used in applications with stringent environmental or safety requirements.
5. Y-Pattern Globe Valve:
- This valve features a Y-shaped configuration for both its flow path and the disk arrangement.
- These valve Reduces pressure drop & is suitable for high-pressure applications.
6. Cage Globe Valve:
- Features an internal cage that surrounds the disk, providing stability and reducing the effects of flow-induced vibrations.
- Commonly used in applications with high-pressure differentials.
7. Pressure Seal Globe Valve:
- Aimed for high-pressure applications with containing a pressure-sealed bonnet, that enhances the seal at higher pressures.
8. Balanced Globe Valve:
- Includes, a balanced plug design which reduce the operating force needed to move the plug against high-pressure differentials.
- Suitable for applications with high-pressure drops.
9. Cryogenic Globe Valve:
- Specifically designed to handle cryogenic fluids, such as liquid nitrogen or Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG).
- Features extended bonnets and specialized materials to withstand low temperatures.
10. Three-Way Globe Valve:
- It has three openings for combining or redirecting flows.
- Commonly used in applications requiring flow redirection.
11. Bolted Bonnet Globe Valve:
- Bolts safe the bonnet to the valve body.
- Suitable, for a wide range of applications.
12. Rotating Disc Globe Valve:
- Controls flow with a rotating disc, not a regular plug.

- For the Valve Disc, commonly stainless steel or other alloys, for durability and corrosion resistance.
- Seat materials, including stainless steel, PTFE, or other resilient materials, influence sealing efficiency.
- Stem materials, typically stainless steel or alloys, contribute to mechanical strength.
- Bonnet material choices, such as carbon steel or stainless steel, impact overall durability.

Advantages of Globe Valves:

Limitations of Globe Valves:
Pressure Drop: Globe Valves can cause a significant pressure drop, rendering them which is unsuitable for applications with high-pressure differentials.
Maintenance: The complex design of Globe Valves can make maintenance more complex compared to other valve types.
Size and Weight: Globe Valves can be bulkier & heavier than other valves, impacting their installation and handling.
Applications of Globe Valves:
Steam Systems: These valves are commonly used in steam systems, due to their capacity for handling high temperatures.
Water Treatment: Their precise control makes Globe Valves suitable for water treatment plants, ensuring optimal flow rates.
Petroleum Industry: These Valves are uses in the oil & gas industry for controlling the flow of various fluids.

Like a Gate Valve they close slowly to prevent fluid hammering, regulate flow & remain leak-free under low pressure when shut off.
