Spades and Spacers work together to perform a similar function to a Spectacle Blind. They are essentially disc-shaped plates inserted between flanges in a Piping System.

  • Isolating the Line: To isolate a section, the Spacer is removed, and the Spade is inserted between the Flanges.
  • Swapping for Flow: When flow is required, the process is reversed. Only half the bolts need to be removed to swap the Spacer and Spade.

During normal operation, Spacers maintain the continuity of the pipeline, allowing fluid to flow freely. However, when maintenance or isolation is required, Spades are inserted between the flanges to block the flow of fluid, providing a safe working environment for maintenance personnel. Spacers are then used to maintain the gap between the flanges, preventing damage to the gaskets & facilitating easy reconnection of the pipeline after maintenance activities are complete.

Installation of Spades and Spacers:

  • Carbon Steel: It is a cost-effective choice for low-pressure & non-corrosive uses. Common grades include AS1548 460NR, A516 Gr70, or forgings like A105, A350 LF2 and A350 LF3.

  • Stainless Steel: It deals greater corrosion resistance for applications involving harsh chemicals or environments. Common grades include A240 P316L, A240 P304L & UNS31803.

  • Other Alloys: For extreme pressure, temperature or highly corrosive situations, special alloys like Super Duplex 2205 or Incoloy 625 might be used.

  • Temperature range of the fluids being conveyed
  • Corrosive nature of the fluids

Applications of Spades and Spacers:
